When I grow up, I want to be a socialite.

Don’t care too much for the Apple-like scrolling hand, but a great business move for the school formally known as “The University of Western Ontario.”  We are now to be affectionately known as simply “Western University.”  With a new classic crest logo and a deepened purple colour, it’s hoped that the Western brand will be more recognizable on a worldwide platform.

So it’s nearing Orientation Week at Western, a time dedicated to welcoming new frosh with open arms, but also raising money for two incredible charities.  Like every year, all money made during O-Week goes towards Shinerama and the Terry Fox Foundation.

For those of you who don’t know, Shinerama supports Cystic Fibrosis by raising money for research and care for those who are affected by the disease. CF is a genetic disease present from birth, and there is no cure. Having the disease basically makes you feel like you’re breathing through a straw every day of your life. Although I’ve never had to experience something as awful as this, and I’ve never personally known someone with CF, I can’t imagine not being able to take a deep breathe of air. 

The Terry Fox Foundation is one that nearly every Canadian has heard about. Terry Fox’s story is legendary and has gone on to raise tons of money for cancer research. Although, again, I’ve never personally had someone in my life with cancer, I fear everyday that someone I love will get it.

Most people find it really difficult raising money for charities they can’t personally relate to.  And although I don’t relate to either of these, I can’t think of two better causes to work towards raising money for. 

If raising money for Shinerama means one kid gets a deep breathe of fresh air in his life, I’ll be happy. I’ll be even happier if 50 kids get that opportunity.

And if raising money for the Terry Fox Foundation, and running in the Terry Fox Run means I can help put a stop to cancer, I’ll raise as much money as I can and run as fast as I can.
